Hey and welcome back to the $1K Newsletter.
To celebrate the end of the month, I’m doing something fun - collecting my best Notes on anything Substack-related and publishing them in this article.
I’ve never seen anyone else do this, but I think it’s a great way to give them a more permanent place to live (than just my profile) because they do contain actual value and tips you can use.
I plan to do that at the end of every month, especially if there’s interest.
So, here we go. The Notes below are meant to inspire you on your Substack journey, share some new tips and hacks I discovered, some of my milestones, what I learned, and how to keep writing to grow your newsletter.
1. Substack is a business ecosystem, not just a content platform.
2. Sell to a small audience.
You don’t need a big audience to start selling, my friend.
3. Subscribe with intention.
Don’t just subscribe to every publication so you can get the same in return.
That’s not natural user behavior. It will only lead to low open rates for many writers, and that doesn’t benefit anyone.
4. The 2 requirements to make it on Substack.
It’s that simple. What do you think? :)
5. Be selective with the content you consume.
We have to keep learning about Substack to get better at it, but not every piece of content out there is worth our time or relevant to our exact situation. So be selective.
6. My results so far.
7. Give yourself permission to charge.
No one else can do it for you.
8. Build authority.
Keep mastering your craft. Keep getting better at what you do and what you teach.
9. Long-form content is back.
10. Create your vision for Substack.
11. Making your first money on the platform.
I love exploring different ways to monetize your Substack. There’s way more possible than just paid subs.
12. Be consistent with Notes.
Notes are the easiest way to grow your publication, so make sure you post them daily.
13. Give readers multiple entry points.
Every article, every Note, every share of your articles on other platforms, every comment you leave, every message in a group chat. It all counts. It’s all entry points. You never know where your next subscriber will come from.
14. Do something AI can’t.
15. Quick Notes hack.
These are so simple and so helpful. I should share them any time I discover a new one.
16. Substack gives you all you need to build a writing business.
17. Write your content yourself.
Natural beats AI-generated.
18. Treat your Substack like an asset.
19. Got my first 100 subscribers.
20. Started a 2nd publication.
Why not, right?!
21. Substack over social media.
Many people feel this way, especially writers. So you’re not alone.
22. Teach what you know.
Many writers think they need to have mastered a topic to be able to teach it. But that’s not the case.
23. Your personal brand matters.
24. Things are just different on Substack.
25. Replacing social media with Substack.
Another thought on that…
26. Charge for your content.
27. The homepage block.
Quick tip to personalize your homepage and convert more visitors into subscribers.
28. Start today.
And that’s it.
28 Notes from April turned into 28 tips for your Substack growth.
Let me know if something resonated, share how your Substack journey is going, and what your plan for May is 🚀
