The Power of Blogging: Why You Should Start One (Even in 2026)
The Power of Blogging: Build Income, Freedom, and Your Voice
This publication exists to teach you the business of blogging. I have over 10 years of experience in the industry and have created plenty of content around that on different platforms.
I just joined Substack and was wondering where to start. There’s a lot I can say, but what is most important? And how do I structure it?
So I remembered something that was fun and effective back when I was running a membership for bloggers - challenges.
So tomorrow, I’m kicking off a free 9-day challenge where we’ll start your blog together. Make sure you subscribe.
I will start with the basics, and first help aspiring bloggers take action, before moving onto teaching more advanced strategies. That’s why this will be the first challenge I publish on Substack.
But today, I want to talk about what a blog is exactly (if you still don’t know) and why starting one might be the best decision of your life (because it was mine!)
What’s a blog, really?
A blog is a website on which the information is updated regularly.
Each blog post has a picture, a catchy headline and links to other websites.
A blog can also be defined as an online journal where a person shares their experience with other people through written content, images, and/or videos.
Unlike websites, blogs are updated regularly and their content is written informally. Some blogs have only one author, while others have a group of authors.
Different people start blogs for different purposes. Some are in it just to share their thoughts and personal opinions with the world. Others start a blog so they can boost their business on it or earn money solely thanks to the website.
A lot of people these days also start a blog to improve the SERP rank of their website (that’s how your site appears on Google’s first page).
For established businesses, it helps to improve their brand. And for new ones, it’s a great way of introducing your brand to your target audience.
To make it simpler, a blog is just a platform that lets you connect with your target audience.
Before we begin building yours, I want you to understand why blogging is so powerful. This section is important as it will help you take a definite decision to start a blog and take your site more seriously once you set it up.
So here are some solid reasons:
You will have your own platform.
It might seem to you that anyone has a website these days. But truth is, many people start a blog just to leave it behind after a few weeks, months, or a year. That means they never see where this can take them.
But your own platform, once you grow it and create content for at least a year, is the best way to build your brand and your tribe online. You can also monetize in sooo many ways.
A blog lives forever.
Social media influencers come and go. Startups die due to changes in the market or people’s desires. But a blog on an evergreen topic lives forever.
In fact, you can even say that the content you publish there and the products you might create and sell down the road become your digital legacy.
You decide the direction of your blog and business.
It’s okay to change directions even after you’ve started your blog.
So many people make mistakes, learn from experience, and then do something like rebranding, or simply enter a different niche (a more profitable one or just a field they are passionate about).
You can also change the monetization strategy of your blog any time you feel like something isn’t right or you want to test a new way to earn money blogging.
Your opportunities down the road are unlimited. You’re the boss here and you decide what the next step would be based on what works for your audience.
You can become financially independent thanks to your blog.
One blog is enough to help you earn thousands of dollars monthly, get to 5 figures a month, or even become a millionaire (like Michelle from Making Sense of Cents, for example, who makes over $100,000 per month through her blog on personal finance).
If you need more proof and success stories to inspire you, I’ve interviewed over 100 bloggers and business owners on my blog Let’s Reach Success. Browse the interviews here.
As your site and reputation grow over the years, you can charge more for sponsored posts, partner with brands and fellow bloggers, create more products, and raise the prices for any services you provide.
Your blog becomes a brand.
You might start with a site and a few pages on it, but over time, that can turn into an online store, a community of dedicated readers, a subscription-based platform with premium content, a personal brand, or even an agency of some kind.
The possibilities are endless as this website becomes the foundation of your next big thing.
You can work from home.
You can blog and do any other activities related to your new online business from home. Set your own working hours, travel while you do it, or just be at home and create the ideal work environment in your home office to get a lot done on a daily basis.
Blogging leads to networking.
It’s hard to make connections online if you are still no one. But once you have a powerful blog, people start reaching out to you with some incredible opportunities.
For instance, I get emails daily about guest posts on my blog, sponsored posts, link exchanges, and affiliate partnerships. I’ve also been approached for meetings in a country somewhere in the world, to receive free products so I can review them, or just to hear that my content has helped and inspired someone.
People sometimes just send me their books or articles to ask me what I think or just reach out to say they read something of mine that they enjoyed.
It’s always a pleasure to see emails like that. But there’s also another aspect to networking as a result of blogging.
It’s much easier to guest post on bigger publications or work with big brands that pay a lot of money when you have your own platform with enough content on it.
Your blog is your portfolio.
If you’re a freelancer or want to start consulting or coaching people soon, your blog and what’s on it will show potential clients what your work, values and personality are. That builds trust, gains respect and helps you land new clients.
Before I was a full-time blogger, I was a freelance writer and I used my blog as my portfolio on sites like Upwork. I simply showed samples of my published content to potential clients and said I can do the same for them. That’s how I started earning a regular income, month after month, while I was building my blog on the side.
Blogging makes you grow.
Last but not least, you must absolutely have a blog if you want to see progress in different areas of life.
Once you do that, you will build new skills because you’ll begin learning more about digital marketing, the legal aspect of setting up an online business, website design, social media, etc. These are all practical and profitable things to learn and it pays off to know more about each.
As you’ll be motivated to up your blogging game and increase your passive income, you will also invest more in yourself. That might mean taking online courses, reading books, listening to podcasts, joining a mastermind, etc.
Blogging with also teach you how to get more creative by working on new things, how to build discipline by publishing content strategically, and how to get out of your comfort zone thanks to trying new things and connecting with people.
